Mavericks Blast Rich Mountain 4-1

MENA, Arkansas -- Northern women's soccer made the long trip to Rich Mountain on Sunday and came back with an 4-1 win over the Bucks.

The Mavs started well controlling the ball with passing combinations all over the field and making Rich Mountain chase the ball on a warm day in Arkansas.  Northern broke through on the scoreboard nineteen minutes into the game on Freshman Emily Allensworth's first goal of her Maverick career.  Allensworth took a pass from Janet Moreno and lobbed the ball over the Bucks goalkeeper's head.  Three minutes later Moreno would continue her scoring streak with a goal of her own.  Mavericks goalkeeper Larissa Haagsma picked up her second assist of the season.

Rich Mountain started the second half strong creating a few early chances and converting one to make the score 2-1.  The Bucks played a ball in behind the Mavericks defense that caused Haagsma to come off her line.  The Rich Mountain forward was able to beat Haagsma to the ball and played it into the empty net.  That would be about all of the offense that Rich Mountain would produce on the day however as the Mavs controlled the ball for a large portion of the duration of the game.  The possession would pay off with twenty minutes to play Milica Bulatovic took a hard shot that rebounded off of the Bucks goalkeeper right to Nicole Anderson who scored her first goal as a Maverick.  Six minutes later Bulatovic would finish the scoring after taking a pass from Sofie Joergensen, dribble past a few defenders, and beat the goalkeeper with a hard shot to make the final score 4-1.

"The girls have really improved as the year has gone on," said coach Michael DuRoy.  "There are times where we can really move the ball well.  I'm so proud of them.  They have faced so much adversity this year and they move on like nothing happened.  If you look at our original plan from the fall semester we are playing without four girls who would have either been starters or at least key reserves.  That's hard for any team to overcome.  Despite that the girls are 6-3, and are playing good soccer."

"I was really happy for Nicole Anderson and Emily Allensworth to pick up goals today," DuRoy added.  "We need other players to step up and take some of the scoring burden off of Milica and Janet.  Nicole and Emily did that today."

The Mavs will return home for a game on Wednesday against Murray State at 2 p.m.
